Ethos
Stuff costs money, I recognise this. People’s creations are sacred to them, I recognise this. But something doesn’t sit right with me that certain websites that are solely based on the generated content of users should be able to monetise that, especially when it was likely started just by that old school desire of wanting to share knowledge freely.
The argument is that this is intellectual property and that greedy corporations need to be paid for this work (the original artists apparently) which I do not deny. But also its not 2006 anymore, surely this has proven to be harmless and affect sales not at all, in fact like most internet based sharing (see TikTok) I imagine it improves artist visibility. Not to mention that likely 90% of the artists that get tabbed actually will have a huge sense of honour to be of a calibre that others want to play their music.
The argument that paying for a site to pay for these licenses also makes me uneasy. If your company profits from this free sharing work, then I can understand why people would need to get paid for it, because you are making a profit. But if it was a non profit, if it was for no monetary gain, this would surely have more of a leg to stand on that it is simply about the sharing of ideas and knowledge between amateur enthusiasts.
Assholes like The Eagles will either die sometime soon, or come to realise that no one is going to think that xXxSuckMyKiss.420xXx actually wrote Hotel California, that its all just a bit of fun. I got a copyright strike on my Dad’s band covering The Eagles, what a bunch of pricks.
